With a new County Mayor, it looks like the political lid might be off and that we might finally start dealing with the serious issues that we have so long avoided.

• Issues like growing the next generation of jobs.

• Like building the communications infrastructure that will support these jobs.

• Like encouraging the serious budgetary restraint and genuine planning that will bring county government in tune with the times.

• Like supporting education and culture in a way that shows we are serious about creating the quality of life people want for themselves and their families.

• Like pursuing greater city-county cooperation.  The cost of not cooperating is simply getting too high.

I want to stop doing business as usual in the courthouse and begin to tackle these issues before it is too late.  To do this, county government will have to become both leaner and more effective.  It will have to learn to do more with the resources it already has.  There will be no new taxes.  This is challenging but it is a challenge I believe the people of Washington County want its commissioners to take on.  I'm ready for it.
